In contrast, the gorilla male's penis is small and black. A gorilla group usually has a harem structure of one adult male, or silverback, living together with several adult females (three to six) and their offspring. A gorilla group usually consists of one dominant male silverback, other males, juveniles, females and their young. However, multiple-male troops also exist. Western lowland females may go gray below the ears and on the neck and top of the head as they age. In western lowland gorillas, the silver may extend to rump and thighs. Not only is the erect chimpanzee penis, with which they court oestrous females, larger than that of gorillas, but its bright colour stands out in striking contrast to their dark pelt. Troops tend to be made of one adult male or silverback, with a harem of multiple adult females and their offspring. Mature silverback males have a saddle of white hair across the small of their backs. By contrast, in gorilla groups the dominant male usually is the only mating partner for the females, or at least he is the one the females prefer. The male gorilla has the role of the protector. Their breeding groups consist of one silverback male, three adult females and their offspring. Males like to settle with other male members of their family. Scientists explain these striking differences between the two species with the theory that chimpanzees need to produce a lot of semen because they compete continuously with other males and mate much more frequently than male gorillas. However, while both sexes leave their birth group, females are always part of a breeding group. Gorilla are found in the great forests of East, Central and Western Africa. After bonobos and chimpanzees, gorillas are the closest relatives to humans (Their DNA is about 98 similar to that of humans). Chimpanzee males need a longer penis due to the voluminous anogenital swelling of the oestrous females. OctoSilverback Gorillas are the largest primates on earth. The erect gorilla penis is only 3-6 cm long, whereas that of a chimpanzee measures 8-18 cm in length. The testicles of a gorilla weigh 30-35 g, whereas those of a chimpanzee weigh about 120 g this compares to about 40 g in the human male. In relation to their body mass, the testicles and penis of a gorilla are not very noticeable and much smaller than in other apes.
